Urine Test Results Inconclusive

  • If you have received a message asking you to submit a repeat urine sample, please see the information below.

  • Please note that this is a common result, and there is no need to worry. We will phone you if any results are significantly abnormal.

  • Your urine sample result was not conclusive. The laboratory found mixed bacterial growth, which is most often due to contamination from bacteria on the skin during collection rather than a urine infection. There was no clear evidence of a urinary tract infection on this sample.

  • To be sure, we would be grateful if you could provide a repeat urine sample. Please collect a clean-catch midstream urine sample if possible and drop it to the surgery at your earliest convenience. Please note that samples cannot be sent to the lab after 9.30 on Friday mornings, so we request you do not submit samples on Fridays after 9.30.

  • For a clean-catch sample, start the urine stream first, then collect some urine midstream into the sterile container without allowing the container to touch the skin. Secure the lid tightly and bring the sample to the surgery as soon as possible after collection. We can provide sample containers in reception if required, or they can be obtained from the pharmacy. Please do not use other containers for this purpose, as it affects the accuracy of the result.
